EARTH SCHOOL - KAFOUNTINE, SENEGAL

2022

CONCEPT

The suggested proposal is centered around a modular and efficient building, in a sustainable and collaborative construction system, with protective and easily controllable architectural shapes and materials.

From an urban perspective our proposal suggests the use of 2 simple shapes, a rectangular building and a circular courtyard surrounded by modular classrooms. The biggest trees on the site are kept, and the building surrounds and encompasses them into the final concept. Access towards the future sports area on the Western side is ensured through the proposed arrangement of the modules, and a new fruit tree plantation is proposed on the Eastern limit of the site, to be used both as shade and as a source of income.

The rectangular building is placed on the Northern side of the site, it represents the first phase of the building, and it centers around the main entrance into the school, creating both structure and protection for the courtyard beyond. It offers space for classrooms, and a common area - later to be converted into classrooms, with 2 lateral enclosed courtyards, for different uses.

The water collection system of the rectangular building collects water on each side, in underground basins, which can be used during the dryer months of the year.

The courtyard is centered around a water collection pond, surrounded by covered spaces, which create dynamic spaces for the children to use and interact with, and the subsequent modules to be added around will form a protective barrier.

The following phases present the suggested development of the site, as more building elements are added:

1. Main building is built to ensure a basis for the school with a partial toilet in the corner of the site

2. Courtyard base is shaped and finished, and the courtyard covering is built with the positions for the following modules prepared

3. Common building space is built and moved, and the original common room is converted into classes, and toilets are expanded

4,5. More classes are added as more funds are allocated to the construction
